CapCut is the video editor almost every short-form creator ends up using, and for good reason. It’s free to start, it runs on your phone and your computer, and the template system lets you copy a trending edit in about thirty seconds.
This guide covers the three things people actually search for: how to download CapCut, how to get the desktop version, and how to use templates properly.
What Is CapCut?
CapCut is a video editor made by ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. It started as a mobile app and later expanded into web and desktop versions for Mac and Windows, so your projects can follow you between devices.
It sits in a sweet spot: more powerful than basic phone editors, far simpler than professional software, and genuinely free for most of what people need.
How to Download CapCut on Your Phone
Step 1: Open the Google Play Store on Android, or the App Store on iPhone.
Step 2: Search for CapCut.
Step 3: Check the developer name before installing. There are plenty of copycat apps with similar icons.
Step 4: Tap Install, open it, and sign in with Google, Apple, TikTok or email.
That’s it. The app is free to download, and you can start editing immediately.
⚠️ One important warning. Only install CapCut from the official app stores. Websites offering modified versions are not official, and those files are frequently bundled with malware or ad injectors. No unlocked feature is worth handing someone access to your phone.
How to Download CapCut Desktop (Windows and Mac)
The desktop version is the one most people don’t realise exists, and it’s genuinely better for anything longer than a Reel.
Step 1: Go to capcut.com in your browser.
Step 2: Click the download option for your system, Windows or Mac.
Step 3: Run the installer and sign in with the same account you use on your phone.
Projects sync between devices, so you can rough-cut on your phone during the day and finish properly on a bigger screen later.
Why bother with desktop? A proper timeline, keyboard shortcuts, easier multi-track editing, and far less fiddling when you’re placing cuts precisely. If you edit for more than a few minutes a day, it’s worth the switch.
There’s also a web version at capcut.com if you don’t want to install anything, which is handy on a work laptop or a borrowed computer.
How to Use CapCut Templates
Templates are why CapCut took over. Someone makes a trending edit, publishes it as a template, and you drop your own clips into the same structure.
On mobile:
- Open CapCut and tap Templates at the bottom.
- Browse or search for the style you want. Check the clip count shown on each one, since templates tell you how many videos or photos they need.
- Tap Use template.
- Select your photos or clips from your gallery in the order you want them.
- Preview it, then tap Export.
From TikTok: if you see a video using a template, tap the “CapCut · Try this template” link at the bottom of the video. It opens straight into CapCut with that template loaded.
A few things that make templates look less generic:
- Change the music. Everyone using that template has the same song. Swapping it instantly makes your version feel different.
- Edit after applying. Tap “Edit more” instead of exporting straight away, and you can adjust timing, text and transitions.
- Match the clip count. If a template wants six clips and you force in three, the pacing falls apart.
- Shoot vertical. Templates are built for 9:16. Horizontal clips get cropped badly.
CapCut Free vs Paid in 2026
This part has changed recently, and most articles online are still quoting the old prices.
CapCut restructured its plans: the old $9.99 Pro tier became “Standard”, and a new, more capable Pro launched at around $19.99 a month, or $179.99 a year, which works out to roughly $15 a month.
App store purchases usually cost a few dollars more than subscribing on the website, because of platform fees. CapCut also doesn’t publish fixed public prices, so check the upgrade screen inside the app for your own country rather than trusting any blog, including this one.
What the free plan gives you: essential editing tools, free templates and transitions, auto captions, 1080p export and basic AI features. For most people making Reels, Shorts and TikToks, that’s genuinely enough.
What you’re paying for: watermark removal on certain assets, higher export quality, the full effects and template library, and the advanced AI tools.
My honest take: stay on free until something specific blocks you. Most creators never hit that wall.
About the Watermark
CapCut doesn’t stamp a watermark across your whole video on the free plan. What it does add is an ending clip with the CapCut logo, and watermarks on some premium templates and effects.
To remove the ending clip, select that last segment on your timeline and delete it before exporting. That takes two taps and costs nothing.
If a watermark appears over the video itself, it means you used a Pro-only template or effect. Swap it for a free one.
Is CapCut Available Everywhere?
Mostly, but not quite.
In India, CapCut is not officially available, as Indian users have been unable to download or use the app. If you’re in India, a solid free alternative is VN Video Editor, and InShot is also popular.
In the US, CapCut briefly went offline in January 2025 alongside TikTok, but Google and Apple restored it to their stores on 13 February.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CapCut free?
Yes, the free plan covers essential editing, templates, auto captions and 1080p export. Paid plans add higher quality exports and the full effects library.
Can I use CapCut on my laptop?
Yes. There’s a desktop app for Windows and Mac, plus a browser version at capcut.com.
Do templates work on desktop?
The template library is mainly a mobile feature. On desktop you edit from scratch or from your own saved projects.
Why is my exported video blurry?
Check your export settings before exporting. Set resolution to 1080p and frame rate to 30 or 60fps. Low settings are the most common cause.
Can I use CapCut videos commercially?
For your own content, generally yes, but read the licensing terms for music and premium assets before using them in paid client work.
Is CapCut safe?
The official app from the Play Store or App Store is a legitimate product used by millions. Files from unofficial download sites are a completely different matter, and those are the ones to avoid.
Final Thoughts
Download it from the official store, start on the free plan, and try the desktop version once you’re editing more than a couple of minutes at a time. Templates are great for keeping up with trends, just change the music so your video doesn’t look like everyone else’s.
Editing AI videos? You might like my AI video prompts to generate the clips, then join them in CapCut. And if you’re on Android, Adobe Premiere just launched there too and it’s free with no watermark.
